ALL FILLER NO THRILLER.

This is a short review I had to do for a feature on the best albums of the year so far. I might just do mini bits like this for records I really dig throughout the year and then go back to them when I'm doing my compiling at the end of the year. Yeah.

The Weeknd House of Balloons

The internet's our best friend in 2011; first the Odd Future bunch, now these Toronto-based babes. It's all so young, fresh... but maybe not so clean; this is a record about letting yourself get swallowed up by the night, about fucking and getting high. Whether it's the low rumbling bass on the album's opener, 'High For This', or the Justin Timberlake-esque echo on 'Wicked Games', the honeyed vocals of Abel Tesfaye make it near impossible for you to keep your clothes on. While House of Balloons generally gets flagged with the R'n'B tag, what the Weeknd succeed in doing stretches it far further. Every one of the tracks on this album holds its own. Every one of these tracks is guaranteed to get you hot.
