PHOTO: CATH SOUCYHave always been a bit of a sucker for the melancholy.
I used to get called a drama queen quite a lot. Being reminded I was not living in a soap opera was a constant. Perma-reality checks. "She's very dramatic" never sounds so good; "passionate" or "imaginative" rings more positive, more gentle.
This softspot for the melancholic leaves me prone to falling for certain types of songs. The "happysad" tracks; those that, while not being characterised nor defined by their tragic dimension, strike a painful chord somewhere.
Zomby's latest, on 4AD, is an entire album of these "happysad" songs. Dedication plays like one of the great tragedies of Racine or Corneille. Beautifully crafted in melancholy. The echoes of voices, the almost despairing womp womp... Saddens this drama queen, moves her to silence.
